South Devon Evacuation 1944

Exercise Tiger is widely known, but click here for the details.

What is less well known is that on 16 November 1943 notices were posted in Slapton, Strete, Blackawton, East Allington, Sherford and Torcross informing the inhabitants that the area had been requisitioned. The whole of the area outlined in black was evacuated of all people ( about 3000), all animals (domestic and livestock) and it was then used for D Day exercises with live ammunition.
The detail for this map was obtained from the US Army Headquarters established in the old school in Sherford. The area was returned to the inhabitants, in phases, during 1944.
